Eradicating Poverty Through Education

“YBR Eradicating Poverty Through Education and Public Welfare Support.”

For more than a decade since its inception, on 16 May 2007 Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) has made great progress in achieving its goal of raising the education standard of poor Malaysians citizens regardless of race, religion and creed as well as raising their socio-economic status through knowledge and education besides promoting the spirit of mutual cooperation and assistance amongst Malaysians.

YBR’s community engagement activities extend beyond philanthropy and focus on building independent, socioeconomically self-sufficient communities. Each initiative is designed to align with YBR’s core values and strategic objectives, often executed through collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other independent bodies. This approach ensures a holistic delivery of services that not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to long-term socioeconomic development.

YBR’s flagship program, the Convertible Study Aid is a financial assistance scheme that enables bright but financially disadvantaged students to pursue higher education at local higher learning institutions. Over the years, a total of RM209 million has been disbursed which has benefited more than 7,412 students to pursue their education across a wide spectrum of academic and practical subjects which are best oriented towards the social and economic development needs of the country and the community.

YBR’s second biggest activity concentration is the Public Welfare which has touched the livelihood of many underprivileged Malaysians to improve their socio-economic well-being through education. The 3 main pillars supported by community development projects are education development, community empowerment and health and environment. YBR continually looks for strategic points where its contribution can make a significant difference and improve lives through education development that resulted in transformative change. As at 2023 the foundation has impacted 1,350,453 individuals with a cumulative contribution worth RM98,804,277.00 through various outreach initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to community welfare and development.

Since 2015 YBR has conducted its Free School Tuition program which provides free extra classes for underserved secondary school children, helping to bridge the educational divide between urban and rural areas. The program has positively impacted more than 120,000 beneficiaries worth RM6.0 million across numerous schools nationwide. Additionally, YBR’s Didik Rakyat seminar has also facilitated more than 125,000 school children in the rural areas since it was first introduced in 2003 totaling RM6.4 million.

Besides providing financial assistance to enhance education level and providing resources for aiding special needs of the poor and the underprivileged; YBR through their public contribution seek to address critical issues and needs by providing financial aid to accredited schools, universities, non-profit organizations and community to carry out impactful education program catered to their special needs. YBR is committed to be a responsible citizen and support community development, projects and organizations, particularly where Malaysians live and work, with financial, in-kind and volunteer resources. As at 2023, YBR has benefited 90,455 individuals from its contribution worth RM4.7 million.

YBR’s volunteerism initiative encourages its student beneficiaries, employees, and members of the public to actively participate in community service. Through various programs such as humanitarian projects and educational support, its volunteerism fosters a spirit of giving back and strengthens the bond between YBR and the communities it serves.

YBR’s pursuit towards sustainability does not end with students. They believe a good organization is one that includes the agenda of empowering indigenous communities into the equation. As a means to empower and improve the community’s standards of living, YBR conducts CSR programmes with the indigenous community. Among the many CSR initiatives that YBR has conducted with the indigenous community was the distribution of food baskets and cash aid contributions to indigenous school children.

Through these comprehensive programs and initiatives, YBR epitomizes the mission and values of an organization that genuinely cares for its community. YBR now contributes towards 10 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through innovative and holistic strategies and approaches to produce holistic human capital that are knowledgeable and competent, possess high moral standards, responsible and capable of achieving high levels of personal well-being as well as contribute towards global harmony and prosperity.

Yayasan Bank Rakyat continues to play a pivotal role in promoting educational equity, supporting underprivileged communities, and empowering future generations to thrive independently.
