Powering Change from the Ground
“Metro Pacific Iloilo Water powers grassroots sustainable solutions.”
Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW), established on July 1, 2019, is a joint venture borne out of Metro Pacific Water and the Metro Iloilo Water District, operating in Iloilo City and seven surrounding towns in the Philippines. While its primary responsibility is water distribution and water infrastructure system improvement, MPIW integrates sustainability into its core operations. By balancing environmental stewardship with social responsibility, MPIW is making a lasting positive impact on the communities it serves.
A critical focus of MPIW’s sustainability strategy is reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), which often results from leaks and aging infrastructure. To achieve this, MPIW employs robust data and technology-driven solutions to ensure an efficient and sustainable water supply. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), MPIW has implemented a robust Water Loss Reduction (WLR) program that divides the network into hydraulic zones and district metering areas. By integrating leak detection devices, pressure valves, and real-time pressure and flow control systems into a cloud-based monitoring platform, MPIW can identify inefficiencies quickly and apply corrective measures. Advanced technologies like Sahara Mobile Leak Detection, pressure management systems, and the Tyfo Fiberwrap Pipe Rehabilitation System ensure that repairs are done swiftly, helping to reduce water wastage or NRW and maintain infrastructure integrity.
At the heart of MPIW’s operation is its commitment to community development. The TaTAP Ilonggo program—named after the Hiligaynon word “TaTAP,” meaning “to care”—embodies MPIW’s dedication to being a reliable partner in the communities it serves. Through TaTAP, MPIW addresses essential needs in health, education, environmental conservation, and livelihoods.
In partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), MPIW offers technical training and employment opportunities to marginalized groups through its Training-2-Employment (T2E) program. This initiative equips individuals with the skills needed to thrive in the water utility sector, promoting economic resilience and empowering local communities.
MPIW is deeply committed to environmental conservation, particularly through its watershed rehabilitation efforts focused on the Tigum-Aganan watershed. Through the CommuniTree program, MPIW engages local communities in environmental protection and tree planting activities. The company also supports the National Greening Program in partnership with government agencies, with a goal of planting one million trees annually. These actions improve water quality, reduce runoff, and ensure the long-term sustainability of local watersheds, benefitting both people and the environment.
In addition to environmental initiatives, MPIW is dedicated to improving public health and sanitation. The company installs permanent multi-faucet handwashing stations in communities, and schools, and distributes hygiene kits to encourage better health practices among students. In times of disaster, MPIW plays a critical role in providing clean, potable water and emergency supplies to affected communities through its Help-to-Others (H2O) program. These efforts have already benefited over 150,000 individuals, demonstrating MPIW’s deep commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
Managing regional water infrastructure comes with its own set of challenges, including varying local ordinances, fluctuating water demands, and the need for strong community support. MPIW addresses these challenges through adaptive strategies and its Hinun-anon sa Barangay participatory sessions. These consultations allow MPIW to tailor its programs to the specific cultural and socioeconomic needs of Iloilo’s diverse communities, all while maintaining operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Regular feedback and consultations ensure that MPIW’s initiatives remain effective, relevant, and aligned with local priorities, while transparent communication and continuous stakeholder dialogue foster mutual understanding and continuous improvement.
MPIW’s collaboration with local policymakers and stakeholders is vital for advancing sustainable water management practices and advocating for regulations that protect water resources. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), MPIW is committed to ensuring safe and reliable access to water, improving community well-being, and promoting environmental resilience.
Looking ahead, MPIW, in partnership with Metro Pacific Water, has set ambitious sustainability goals. By 2026, MPIW plans to transition to renewable energy, starting with the clean energy-powered operation of its desalination plant. The company is also adopting circular economy principles, with a focus on reducing waste and exploring waste-to-energy technologies.
MPIW’s integrated approach to sustainability combines innovative technologies with active community engagement. Beyond water distribution, MPIW is creating solutions that benefit the environment and the communities it serves. By focusing on operational excellence and fostering meaningful partnerships, with its forward-thinking initiatives, MPIW is helping ensure a more sustainable and resilient future for future generations in the Philippines.
Through its commitment to environmental stewardship, community empowerment, and sustainable development, Metro Pacific Iloilo Water is proving that local utilities have the power to drive meaningful change—empowering Ilonggo communities, protecting resources, and driving sustainable development from the ground up.
