“Speeding Towards a Sustainable Future”
Flexo has made great strides in its efforts to ensure a sustainable business.
Flexo Manufacturing Corporation (“Flexo”) was established in 1955 and registered in Caloocan City, Metro Manila, Philippines. With over 68 years of history, Flexo has earned its reputation as a premier provider of innovative packaging solutions and has become an
indispensable partner for FMCG companies, catering to their packaging needs with precision
and ingenuity. With three plant locations, Flexo grew as the dominant supplier with the highest market share amongst all suppliers of flexible packaging in Procter & Gamble and Unilever, the sole supplier of Suntory Ribena juice products in cheerpack packaging exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong, China, Australia, and New Zealand, the biggest local supplier of pharmaceutical laminates packaging for GSK brands Centrum, Caltrate, Stresstabs, and various brands made by Interphil Laboratories, Pascual Laboratories, Hizon Laboratories, United Laboratories, Taisho Pharmaceuticals, and many other pharmaceutical companies.
In 2018, Flexo released its first Sustainability Vision. It states that by 2023, the company will have commercially available Approved and Certified Compostable Packaging options which is aligned to its customers’ own Sustainability Vision. To reinforce its Vision, Flexo cascaded its official Sustainability campaign, “Go Green, Go Good – Planting for a Sustainable Future” to all its stakeholders. Sustainability is categorically identified as one section in all Design and Product Development reviews for all new and existing Flexo Product Developments.
Coherent to its Vision, Last March 2023 Flexo received its Certification from TÜV Austria for Compostaflex, a compostable laminate innovated by its R&D department. Compostaflex is the Philippines’ first bio-material flexible packaging with Certificate of Conformity in both Industrial and Home Composting Environments.
Flexo’s competence to innovate a Sustainable Packaging led by its strong Research & Development team has been globally recognized by the Regional R&D Headquarters of its renowned customers Procter & Gamble in Belgium and Unilever in Vietnam. Amongst the compostable packaging options developed in partnership with its customers include; detergent sachet that passed machineability and transportation test, soap bar sachet that passed customer machineability and export hair care product sachet that passed customer’s validation trials. On Recyclable packaging options, Flexo is the only local flexible packaging partner selected by Regional Unilever R&D Team to carry out trial validations for its hair care and oral care product applications using MDOPE/VMPE structure.
Flexo’s Sustainability Goals are grouped into Sustainable Packaging Development (economic), Corporate Sustainable Goals (social/environmental) and Sustainability Programs (social/environmental). In its established Road Map for Sustainability, the company prioritized setting-up the Sustainability foundation by creating its Sustainability & Environmental Policy and building an active group of Sustainability Champions led by the Chief Sustainability Officer (also the Chief Product Technology Officer) to regularly monitor economic, environmental and social impacts of the set Sustainability Goals. The Chief Sustainability Officer leads and accounts for the success of Sustainability Initiatives. Progress reports from monthly Sustainability Champion Meetings are reported to the President and Chairman during the monthly Management Committee Meeting and to Flexo’s Board of Directors bi-annually.
Besides their clients, Flexo ensures that a culture of sustainability is ingrained in their company. It actively encourages its employees to adhere to its sustainability goals, values, and vision. All Sustainability programs run by Flexo, such as Flexo’s Heart for Earth, Think Outside the Trash, and Christmas Scrap Art Making Contest, include awards and prizes for the chosen employees after deliberations by the Sustainability Champions and Top Management Team. Furthermore, Sustainability targets and key performance indicators are a part of the Annual Performance Appraisal following Flexo’s policy on incentives for Performance Appraisal.
Among the initiatives Flexo has planned for the near future, is the publication and distribution of its first official Annual Sustainability Report to its Stakeholders by February of 2024. It also aims to measure and benchmark its products’ carbon footprints against industry standards. Besides that, Flexo has plans to organize more Sustainability Programs within the organization and to initiate corporate social responsibility activities.
