Company and community initiatives help CPC Corporation, Taiwan run cleaner.

CPC Corporation, Taiwan (CPC) is a state-owned petroleum, natural gas, and gasoline company. Established in 1946, its core business is in oil and gas exploration and production, procurement and imports, refining, storage and transportation, marketing and the production of petrochemical raw materials.
Environmental protection has always been an element of prime importance for CPC and their progress has been driven by sustainability and greater environmental protection. Having embraced Sustainable Development into their values and policies since 2003, CPC has continually committed to actively promoting energy conservation, emissions reduction, and environmental and ecological protection in their corporate programmes. A Sustainable Management Committee, supervised by the Chairman, convenes thrice yearly to oversee the strategy, planning and execution of the company’s sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental and ecological conservation, social care, policy and R&D, and environmental accounting and information.
In its efforts to promote green energy industry development and new energy policies, CPC cooperates with the government’s policies of the transformation of the petrochemical industry and circular economy, the promotion of clean energy, and expanding the use of natural gas. It is also working on transforming conventional gas stations into smart green ones, combining two goals into one initiative by helping promote economic development and environmental protection.
In response to the Taiwanese government’s policy calls for full electrification (or hybridization) of all domestically-produced vehicles by 2040, the company actively invested into R&D of environment-friendly processes to successfully complete 50 green-building petrol stations, including 11 diamond grade stations. CPC plans to accelerate the transition of its gas stations to green energy stations and plans to develop the market for both EV charging stations and battery exchange by installing 1,000 electric vehicle charging and battery exchange facilities in gas stations and public areas within three years and introducing big data, smart applications to enable greater connectivity of these facilities to proximate communities.

The company is also committed to becoming a responsible international energy player that takes into account the environment by actively improving their quality of products, promoting energy saving and waste reduction, emphasizing pollution prevention, and strictly abiding by environmental regulations. CPC has also established environmental monitoring systems, conducts environmental education and training, and improves environmental technologies through intensive Research and Development. CPC’s environmental protection spending in 2018 was approximately US$258.52 million, including operational, R&D, social activity, loss and compensation cost, fees and taxes.

CPC strictly adheres to environmental protection laws and regulations and has set up an environmental protection information management system. Each factory also took the initiative of inspecting the implementation of environmental protection on site. As of 2018, 21 departments or divisions of CPC have been awarded the ISO 14001 certificate for environmental management system, and have passed annual checks.

Believing that community participation is important to the success of ecological conservation, CPC actively organizes ‘energy education and publishing. By adhering to green co-existence with society, nature, and business, CPC proactively links to communities, experts and scholars, and government units to establish ecological conservation partnerships such as The Green Dragon Creativity Summer Camp to provide youth with guidance for lesson planning, and equip children with knowledge in relation to energy and the environment.
