“Making a Positive Impact Through Sustainable Healthcare Solutions“
Science-based biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca addresses the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the Philippines through a collaborative and holistic approach
AstraZeneca is a global, science-based biopharmaceutical company that zeros in on the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines, predominantly for the treatment of diseases across three therapy areas – (1) Oncology, (2) Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism, and (3) Respiratory. AstraZeneca is among the top 10 largest ethical multinational pharmaceutical companies in the Philippines. It is the leading pharmaceutical company on the number of clinical trials conducted in the Philippines between 2019-2021.
True to its value of putting patients first while recognizing the interconnectivity between the health of people, the planet, and its business, AstraZeneca works towards a future where sustainable healthcare solutions are accessible to all. In the Philippines, this involves addressing the burden of the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as Lung Cancer, Type 2 Diabetes, and Asthma through a collaborative and holistic approach. AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (Phils.), Inc. improves access to holistic disease management and its medicines through integrated patient support programs, which range from education, prevention to testing and treatment. Thus, one of AstraZeneca’s main sustainability pillars is access to healthcare, which attests to its community centricity.
AstraZeneca addresses the cardiovascular, renal and metabolism therapy area by supporting the ACT Now For Diabetes led by Diabetes Philippines. This partnership between Diabetes Philippines, local government units, and AstraZeneca identify type 2 diabetic patients who are most at risk of developing complications. The program aims to educate the public and private physicians about comprehensive diabetes management and to empower patients with the right information. As of this year, thousands of Filipino patients have been assessed since the program was established early this year. On top of this, AstraZeneca’s Beyond Sugar Social Media Campaign which promotes better understanding of Type 2 diabetes and its harmful effects on the heart, kidney and other organs has reached millions of Filipinos.
In the respiratory therapy area, AstraZeneca’s Juan Healthy Lung program educates patients, physicians and pharmacists towards improved asthma management to reduce asthma burden and mortality rates in the Philippines. It capitalizes on social media channels such as the Breathe Better campaign which provides Filipinos with content that will help them cope with their asthma.
In Oncology, AstraZeneca’s Lung Ambition Alliance program established a healthcare ecosystem that aims to lower burden on morbidity and mortality of Lung Cancer by partnering with key stakeholders such as the patients, healthcare providers and experts. It covers disease awareness and emphasizes the value of early screening by pioneering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in chest x-rays for early lung cancer detection. The program includes a national cancer triage hotline in partnership with Cancer Coalition, Philippine Society of Medical Oncology and Philippine Society of Oncology supporting a multidisciplinary approach for better disease management. AstraZeneca also leverages on social media channels for lung cancer awareness and education through LVNG with Lung campaign which offers a support community that aims to inspire and give hope to cancer patients and people living with them.
Last but not least, AstraZeneca has supported the fight against COVID-19 through a multilateral agreement which brings the Philippine government, Local Government Units and private donors together to work towards the common goal of supporting a sustainable immunization program to restore normalcy in the lives of Filipinos. This partnership underscores AstraZeneca’s commitment to provide an effective and well-tolerated vaccine to help stem the pandemic. Beyond the vaccine, AstraZeneca continually pushes the boundaries of science to help uplift the healthcare standards for all Filipino families.
