Multispecialty Service and Growth
“As the Hospital Director of St Camillus Medical Centre, Dr Jacqueline Ciron Angeles has turned an aging hospital into a vibrant, green, and efficient medical facility internally and externally.”
Dr. Jacqueline Ciron Angeles is the Hospital Director of St Camillus Medical Centre (SCMC) – a Level 2 hospital in Pasig City, Metro Manila, Philippines offering a wide range of medical services including surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine (with subspecialties), ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery, and critical care. The hospital also has various specialized areas such as an Animal Bite Center, TB-DOTS, Heart Station, Dialysis Centre, and a Physical and Rehabilitation Center. SCMC is managed by the Camillian Fathers (Ministers of the Infirm), a religious order founded by St Camillus de Lellis in the 16th century.
Service with a Heart
Since taking on the role of Hospital Director, Dr. Jacqueline Angeles has brought many changes to SCMC while staying true to its motto of providing “service with a heart”. “Serving with Heart in our Hands”, offers compassionate and loving care to all patients, regardless of who they may be.
As a non-profit, non-stock organization, the hospital was operating at a loss, however, in 2023 it improved its financial standing by making a turnaround. This positive change was accomplished through several actions such as updating uncollected receivables, enhancing marketing strategies, and boosting social media engagement.
Green Projects
Through Dr. Jacqueline Angeles’s initiatives, the hospital also embarked on several Green Projects. Realizing that the healthcare industry consumes a lot of natural resources and generates a lot of waste while healing patients, SCMC moved to adopt sustainable practices to reduce its environmental impact and promote a healthier future for all stakeholders, including patients and the wider community.
Energy-efficient systems such as LED lighting, high-efficiency heating ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems were installed. The hospital also implemented renewable energy systems such as solar lights to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, SCMC implemented a Hospital Information System to improve overall efficiency through automation, thereby lowering environmental impact while improving efficiency.
A Waste Reduction Program that includes recycling and composting as well as the use of sustainable products and materials was also introduced.
For her efforts in greening the hospital, Dr. Angeles was recognized as Hospital CEO of the Year Excellence awardee at the 2023 Asian Hospital Management Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Dr. Angeles was likewise duly lauded for “Preserving Health and Environment: St Camillus Medical Center’s Path to an Eco-friendly and Sustainable Hospital” at the International Hospital Federation (IHF) World Health Congress in Lisbon, Portugal in 2023.
Change in the Hospital Facade
To reflect its renewed direction, the hospital’s façade was enhanced by adding more lighting and solar lampposts. Clearer signages were also put up to welcome and direct patients.
Dr Jacqueline Angeles also advocated for the use of the “Garden of Positivity” filled with plants and trees, encouraged employees to donate plants, create a vegetable garden, all vegetable cafeteria menus on Fridays and sitting areas made of recycled materials within the hospital compound to create a relaxing environment for patients and employees.
Reorganization of Departments
Dr. Jacqueline Angeles reorganized the structure by creating a more horizontal organizational chart, adding an Ancillary Division Head, creating the offices of Quality Assurance, Customer Relations, committees for the fire and earthquake emergency response team, revamping the Sales and Marketing department, and the General Services Section for improved operational efficiency.
The hospital’s roster of Medical specialists increased from 103 to 137, and subspecialists from 39 to 54 to better serve patients. The in-patient’s average length of stay improved from 7 days to 3 days.
Accomplishments
Apart from receiving international recognition and awards for implementing their Green Project initiative at SCMC, Dr. Angeles’s team, the Nursing Division, and the Ancillary Division submitted papers and were accepted this year at the International Hospital Federation World Hospital Congress in Rio de Janeiro. The papers are “Bridging the Gap of Mental Health through Group Therapy in the Stroke Warriors of SCMC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation” and “Music Intervention on Perceived Emotional Stress in the Hospital.”
CSR
Under Dr Angeles, SCMC has run many Corporate Social Responsibility programs. Initiatives include medical and surgical missions, free nutrition counselling, blood donation drives and lay forums for World Arthritis Day, Vascular Disease Day, Sight Saving Month, Diabetes Awareness Week, Rabies Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness, International Ear Care Day with free hearing tests, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Philippine Digestive Health Week, National Lung Month, Women’s Week and National Women’s Day. During the Rosary Month “Lend a Hand” and St Camillus de Lellis Feast Day, SCMC provided free consultations on Internal Medicine, General Paediatrics, and Ob-Gyne and gave out free vitamins and healthy snacks.
