He hasn’t been called the “Thai Electricity Tycoon” and his company the producer of the “Tesla of Southeast Asia” for nothing. The fact is—Somphote Ahunai, the Founder and CEO of Energy Absolute (EA), is all of that and more.
While his commercial electric vehicles (EVs) such as Mine Mobility cars, Mine Buses, and MINE Smart Ferries have captured Asia’s attention, EA’s impact extends far beyond transportation. The company is a leader in renewable energy, investing in solar and wind power, biodiesel production, lithium-ion battery development, and EA Anywhere charging stations.
Good for the Country and the World
“My business is a pioneer in Thailand,” says Somphote Ahunai. “It deals in renewable energy, producing clean energy to reduce global warming.”
His biodiesel business benefits not only the environment but also farmers. Biodiesel B100, a cleaner-burning fuel, is made from crude palm oil, reinforcing sustainable agricultural practices. At the same time, EA’s lithium-ion batteries are shaping the future of Thailand’s EV industry, positioning the country as ASEAN’s emerging EV hub.
EA is also developing human capital. “My business has helped develop skills and create value for Thai people because there is no company in Thailand or Thai person who has gone into innovation this seriously,” he affirms.
About Energy Absolute
Established in 2006 and publicly listed by 2013, Energy Absolute is a trailblazer in “Green Products” and innovation. Operating through five key business segments, EA has built an integrated ecosystem that propels Thailand’s renewable energy industry forward.
Biodiesel Business
EA’s biodiesel segment produces Biodiesel B100, Green Diesel, and PCM (Phase Change Material), using crude palm oil as its main ingredient. These biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, while their by-products, such as purified glycerine, are used in cosmetics, medicine, soap, and toothpaste.
Power Business
The company operates solar and wind power plants across multiple provinces in Thailand, converting renewable energy into electricity, which is then sold to the national electricity authority. The first solar power plant began commercial operations in 2012, marking the start of EA’s clean energy revolution.
Energy Storage System Business
EA develops and distributes lithium-ion batteries for its EV fleet and broader energy storage applications. In 2021, it opened ASEAN’s first US$3 billion battery gigafactory, setting a new benchmark for energy storage technology in the region.
Electric Vehicle Business
EA designs and manufactures electric vehicles, including passenger cars, industrial vehicles, buses, trucks, and ferries.
The Mine Smart Ferry, launched in 2021, operates on an 800kWh lithium-ion battery, charging in just 15 minutes and eliminating noise, water, and air pollution. The same year, EA introduced its Thai Smile Bus fleet, replacing outdated diesel buses. As of October 2023, 1,250 E-buses cover 71 routes in Metropolitan Bangkok, with a complete transition set for 2025.
Charging Station Business
Through EA Anywhere, the company provides nationwide EV charging solutions. By April 2022, there were already 430 EA Anywhere charging stations in operation, ensuring widespread accessibility for EV users.
Making Many Firsts
Apart from using cutting-edge technology, EA has pioneered world-first innovations. Its lithium-ion batteries store high volumes of energy, allowing longer usage between charges.
“Megawatt charging applies to the E-Ferry, and Ultra-Fast Charge batteries can be fully charged within 15 to 20 minutes,” Somphote explains. By integrating every stage of the EV lifecycle—from electricity generation and battery production to vehicle manufacturing and charging stations—EA has created a seamless EV ecosystem.
But EA’s ambitions go beyond building an EV empire. The company is accelerating Thailand’s transition to zero carbon emissions, placing the country on the global map for renewable energy excellence.
“I see this as an achievement that EA has made,” he declares.
Deep Thinker, Strategic Leader
At the core of EA’s success is Somphote Ahunai’s deep analytical thinking. Holding two Honorary Doctorates in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy, alongside a Master’s in Business Administration, he attributes his ability to solve complex business challenges to his dual expertise in engineering and management.
“I use my engineering skills as logic to overcome the complex problems of business,” he reflects.
A True Son of Thailand
A patriot at heart, Somphote views EA as a vital force in Thailand’s development. “As a pioneer in the renewable energy industry, EA finds great pleasure in doing this business as it can help develop the country.”
Despite being established for only 15 years, EA has made remarkable progress. “I believe the story of EA will make Thailand proud,” he says.
