Since taking the helm of Shell’s Malampaya Deep-water Gas-to-Power project in 2016, Don has helped reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels by 30 percent, supplying 3,200 megawatts of power to Luzon while improving air quality. Under his leadership, Malampaya has generated USD 11.9 billion in revenue for the Philippine government and created new job opportunities.
Developing Homegrown Talent
Committed to empowering Filipino professionals, Don prioritises workforce training and upskilling. Today, Malampaya’s onshore and offshore operations, including its underwater services team, are entirely Filipino-led. His focus on operational excellence has also ensured zero reportable incidents in high-risk areas, earning him the Gawad Dr. Pio Valenzuela Recognition of Excellence in 2017.
Driving Social and Environmental Impact
Beyond energy, Don actively supports initiatives in public health, environmental conservation, and sustainable power. Through the Malampaya Foundation, efforts have been made to restore marine ecosystems and combat illegal fishing, while the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation protects endangered wildlife. Community-based programmes such as Bio-intensive Gardening have promoted organic and sustainable farming, while the Kilusan Ligtas Malaria programme has reduced malaria cases by 91 percent in Palawan. The SINAG and Access to Energy projects have brought solar power and clean water to remote areas, improving the quality of life for many.
