Colin Tan June Teng, Managing Director of Hatten Group Sdn Bhd, believes that knowledge and boldness are the keys to success. “It is important to know your industry. Learn as much as you can and study both local and global market trends. Once you have developed a clear understanding of the sector, do not be afraid to dream big. The world thrives on new ideas and innovation. Personally, my motto is changing ‘impossible’ to ‘I. M. POSSIBLE,’” he says, embodying the ambitious spirit that has propelled Hatten Group to great heights.
A Legacy of Growth and Development
Hatten Group stands as a leader in Malaysia’s property development, asset management, and investment industry. Established in 2004 and incorporated in 2008, the company’s name, “Hatten,” is derived from the Japanese words for “growth” and “development,” a fitting reflection of its vision. Over the years, Hatten has pioneered large-scale projects, including the iconic Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, the luxurious Hatten Hotel Melaka, and the ambitious 25-acre waterfront development, Hatten City.
A recipient of 30 prestigious international awards, Hatten Group continues to set benchmarks in the industry, delivering excellence in quality, functionality, aesthetics, and service. Its ability to push boundaries and think beyond convention has established it as a formidable force in Malaysia’s competitive property sector.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
The success of Hatten Group has been built on visionary leadership and a willingness to take risks. “Back in 2004, Group Chairman Datuk Wira Eric Tan, Group Chief Executive Officer Edwin Tan, and I defied critics by taking on an abandoned development in Melaka and transforming it into our flagship project—Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, the largest shopping mall in Melaka. This bold, pioneering spirit is what sets Hatten Group apart from the competition,” says Colin Tan.
Hatten’s reputation as a trusted brand is backed by a proven track record of success. The company integrates innovation, quality, and value creation into every project while also prioritizing its role as a responsible corporate citizen. Hatten actively enriches the community and contributes to environmental conservation. In Melaka, the company’s high-end integrated developments have not only elevated property values but also introduced international brands such as Uniqlo, H&M, MNG, Braun Buffel, and G-2000 to the city’s retail landscape.
A Fully Integrated Approach
What distinguishes Hatten Group is its comprehensive corporate structure, which encompasses every aspect of property development—from architecture and construction to leasing, management, branding, and hospitality. This all-encompassing approach ensures consistency and maintains Hatten’s high standards across all divisions.
With a diverse client base that includes both local and international investors, Hatten’s extensive portfolio continues to attract new and experienced buyers alike. From its humble beginnings with just 10 employees, the company has grown into a powerhouse with a 500-strong workforce across five offices in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Johor Bahru, and Singapore.
Leadership and Vision
Colin Tan’s journey in the industry began with an Honours Degree in Finance from the University of Dublin, Ireland. Determined to gain a comprehensive understanding of high finance, he immersed himself in various economic and investment sectors, an experience that has played a crucial role in shaping Hatten’s global vision.
His mentor, Datuk Wira Eric Tan, played an instrumental role in nurturing his passion for property development. “Since my youth, he honed my interest in the industry. With 40 years of experience in property development, he has built a towering record of successes. His tenacity and clarity of vision continue to inspire me to this day,” says Colin Tan.
When asked how he defines success, he responds, “Success is immeasurable. It is not about how much money you make but how much you give back to your stakeholders and your contribution to the community.” He is a strong advocate for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which are channeled through Hatten Cares, focusing on eco-awareness, public health, and care for the less fortunate.
The Road Ahead
Looking towards the future, Colin Tan envisions Hatten Group expanding its footprint into wellness, medical amenities, and educational facilities. “I hope to see Hatten Group established as one of the region’s Top 10 Premier Property Developers by the year 2020,” he states.
Despite his professional commitments, he remains dedicated to his family, ensuring that quality time with his children is always a priority. Balancing ambition with personal fulfillment, Colin Tan embodies the essence of a leader who is not only shaping the future of real estate but also creating a lasting impact on the communities Hatten Group serves.
