Christopher Loh

“Loh and behold!”—the dramatic turnaround of uab bank under Christopher Loh’s leadership is nothing short of remarkable. When he took over in 2017, the bank was struggling, spending 97 cents for every dollar earned. With relentless determination, Loh rolled up his sleeves, working 18-hour days to analyze financial transactions, visit branches, and comb through Myanmar’s extensive banking regulations. His deep dive uncovered process inefficiencies, weak internal controls, and unnecessary spending—all of which he swiftly addressed.

The result? By 2019, uab bank was named Myanmar’s Best Bank by Euromoney and Asian Banking & Finance, recording two consecutive years of record-breaking profits. More than just financial success, uab bank also launched the #BeTheChange Myanmar movement, empowering underprivileged communities through scholarships, internships, and sponsorships.

Creating a Culture of Excellence

Loh’s leadership not only turned the bank’s finances around but also reshaped its workplace culture. Today, uab’s 2,000 employees—fondly known as “uabians”—are no longer just workers; they have careers. They take pride in seeing their bank rise from a second-tier institution to standing alongside Myanmar’s top financial players.

The bank’s community-driven initiatives also reflect Loh’s belief that success should extend beyond profits. uab sponsors Myanmar’s badminton star, Thet Htar Thuzar, in her quest for the country’s first Olympic medal, and supports the Myanmar contingent at the 46th Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program.

Loh’s Journey: From Humble Beginnings to Banking Leader

Despite his remarkable achievements, Loh admits he wasn’t the most diligent student. However, his work ethic more than made up for it. Growing up in Singapore, he juggled multiple jobs—including working as an insurance agent and part-time media reporter—just to support himself. He credits his adaptability and discipline to his National Service experience, which taught him resilience, resourcefulness, and a drive to take charge of his future.

Loh’s inspiration doesn’t come from high-profile business icons but from everyday individuals—the generous man who gave him an opportunity to sell snacks as a child, and the hardworking young locals who sacrifice their free time to support their families.

Leadership Philosophy: Bold Yet United

Loh’s leadership style is one of tough debates but unified action. His “agree to disagree” motto fosters open discussions within his team, ensuring that decisions—once made—are embraced collectively as “one uab.” He believes true leaders have the courage to create change but must also be meticulous in execution.

Comparing himself to leaders of start-up companies, Loh describes himself as someone who challenges norms, embraces big visions, and drives innovation. He argues that leadership isn’t something rigidly taught but cultivated through experience, mentorship, and an openness to learn.

A Legacy in the Making

For Loh, leadership is about legacy and stewardship. He aspires to be remembered as one of uab’s greatest CEOs and envisions the bank thriving as Myanmar’s best financial institution even in 2050. To him, success isn’t a destination—it’s a continuous journey.

The sheer guts and tenacity demonstrated by Christopher Loh is bound to make him a megastar in Asian business. Loh embodies everything that is positive about the new Asian business leader and will doubtlessly be a much sought-after mentor,” says Shanggari Balakrishnan, CEO of MORS Group.

Indeed, Loh’s story is an inspiration for business leaders across Asia—a testament to the power of resilience, vision, and the courage to drive meaningful change.
