Yayasan Bank Rakyat: Excellence in Education and Sustainable Development
Since its establishment on 16 May 2007, Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) has been dedicated to uplifting the education standards of underprivileged Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, or creed. Through knowledge and education, YBR strives to improve socioeconomic conditions while fostering a spirit of cooperation among Malaysians. The foundation goes beyond philanthropy, focusing on empowering communities to become independent and self-sufficient. By collaborating with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and independent bodies, YBR ensures a holistic and sustainable approach to community development that has earned recognition among prestigious awards for social impact.
Supporting Students Through the Convertible Study Aid
YBR’s flagship initiative, the Convertible Study Aid, provides financial assistance to academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students, enabling them to pursue higher education at local institutions. To date, RM209 million has been disbursed, benefiting over 7,412 students across various fields essential to national and community development. This award-winning program exemplifies business leadership in creating accessible education pathways.
Advancing Public Welfare Through Education
Public welfare is a core focus of YBR’s efforts, aiming to improve the lives of underprivileged Malaysians through education. The foundation’s three key pillars—education development, community empowerment, and health and environment—guide its impactful initiatives. By 2023, YBR had positively impacted 1,350,453 individuals, with a total contribution of RM98,804,277, demonstrating the scalable solutions that sustainability awards frequently honor.
Bridging Educational Gaps With Free School Tuition
Since 2015, YBR has been running its Free School Tuition program, offering extra classes to underserved secondary school students to bridge the education gap between urban and rural areas. This initiative has benefited more than 120,000 students across Malaysia, with an investment of RM6 million. Additionally, the Didik Rakyat seminar, launched in 2003, has reached over 125,000 rural schoolchildren, with total funding of RM6.4 million. YBR also provides financial aid to accredited schools, universities, non-profits, and communities to implement specialized education programs. As of 2023, these contributions have supported 90,455 individuals, amounting to RM4.7 million.
Promoting Volunteerism and Indigenous Community Support
YBR actively encourages student beneficiaries, employees, and the public to engage in community service. Through humanitarian projects and educational support programs, YBR fosters a culture of giving back. The foundation also prioritizes indigenous community empowerment, running CSR initiatives such as food basket distributions and financial aid for indigenous schoolchildren to enhance their standard of living.
Driving Sustainable Impact Aligned With Global Goals
YBR aligns its initiatives with 10 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on producing well-rounded, knowledgeable, and responsible individuals. By adopting innovative and holistic approaches, YBR continues to play a vital role in promoting educational equity, supporting disadvantaged communities, and empowering future generations to achieve long-term success and global prosperity. This systems leadership approach positions YBR among organizations recognized by international awards for sustainable development.
