For over two decades, Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) has remained committed to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Since launching the Malampaya deep-water gas-to-power project in 2001, SPEX has played a vital role in providing energy while uplifting communities. Supplying up to 20% of the Philippines’ electricity needs, Malampaya reduces reliance on energy imports and improves air quality with 30%-50% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional fuel sources.
Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Energy
SPEX, through Pilipinas Shell Foundation, has set up seven microgrids in remote North Palawan, bringing solar, wind, and hydroelectric power to over 700 households. Reliable electricity allows children to study at night, supports livelihoods, and improves overall quality of life. Fishers can store their catch longer, artisans can increase production, and streets are now well-lit for safety.

Advancing Public Health and Education
In 1999, SPEX launched the Kilusan Ligtas Malaria programme, reducing malaria morbidity by 91% and mortality by 96% in Palawan. Educational initiatives, led by Malampaya Foundation and Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, have empowered fishing communities with sustainable practices and environmental conservation knowledge. Bio-intensive Gardening projects promote organic farming, while conservation programmes protect biodiversity.
A Long-Term Commitment
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, SPEX ensured food security through the Ani Para sa Bayani project, connecting farmers with frontline workers and vulnerable communities. The company’s dedication to safety is reflected in its 19-year streak of Goal Zero, achieving no reportable incidents at its Malampaya onshore gas plant.
SPEX’s unwavering commitment to community enrichment is more than corporate social responsibility—it is a deep-seated investment in a better future.
Programmes that uplift communities are not lip service for a company such as Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX), which has been engaging communities and improving their lives for decades. The world would be a better place with more companies that are as committed as SPEX.” - Shanggari Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, MORS Group
