PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) was established in 1985 as the exploration and production arm of Thailand’s national oil and gas company, PTT Public Company Limited. PTTEP operates in petroleum exploration, development, and production while also investing in renewable energy, advanced technology, and environmental conservation. With over 50 projects across 17 countries, the company is dedicated to ensuring energy security and supporting sustainable development.
Restoring Marine Ecosystems Through the “Fish Home” Initiative
PTTEP’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its “Fish Home” initiative, launched in 2017 in the Gulf of Thailand and Songkhla Lagoon. The project combats marine biodiversity degradation by installing artificial fish homes, creating safe breeding grounds for aquatic species. This initiative has led to a significant increase in marine populations, enhanced local fishery yields, and improved the livelihoods of fishing communities.
Developed by PTTEP’s Petroleum Development Support Base in Songkhla, the project is a collaborative effort involving local communities, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and academic institutions such as Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya. Since its launch, PTTEP has installed fish homes across nine districts in Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat, engaging over 1,000 participants and benefitting 512,000 residents.
Economic and Social Impact on Local Communities
Research conducted in 2020 highlighted the initiative’s success, showing a significant rise in crab, fish, and prawn production. The return on investment (ROI) for crabs increased from 2.35 to 28.93, while prawns saw an increase from 2.86 to 30.41. This growth has tripled the income of participating families, improving their quality of life. Additionally, the project has strengthened social bonds within communities, as fishermen spend less time offshore and more time engaging in community activities.
Expanding Community Development Initiatives
Beyond marine conservation, PTTEP supports community development through four key initiatives: basic needs, education, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation. The company shares industry knowledge and resources to foster social sustainability and strengthen Thailand’s workforce. Educational programs bridge the gap between academia and industry, equipping future generations with the skills needed for the country’s energy and resource management sectors.
Commitment to Sustainability and Net Zero Goals
PTTEP’s sustainability strategy aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, the company aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. As of 2024, PTTEP has reduced its cumulative greenhouse gas emissions by over 3.22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent compared to its 2020 baseline.
Driving Positive Change for Future Generations
PTTEP’s initiatives showcase its dedication to environmental preservation, community enrichment, and sustainable economic growth. Through innovative projects like the “Fish Home” initiative and broader sustainability efforts, PTTEP continues to set new standards for responsible business practices, creating long-term value for society and the environment.
