Community-Building, One Initiative at a Time
Manulife (Cambodia) PLC commenced operations in Cambodia in 2012 as the first international life insurance company in the country. As a global company, Manulife has long been committed to serving local communities through impactful CSR programs. One of the world’s largest life insurance providers, its primary goals include promoting financial literacy, encouraging health and wellness, and advocating for road safety. In Cambodia, these efforts focus on three key areas: road safety, financial literacy, and community health.
Advocating for Road Safety
Road accidents remain a significant concern in Cambodia, with an average of five fatalities daily. In 2017, 75% of road deaths involved motorcyclists, and 65% of these could have been prevented through helmet use. To combat this, Manulife collaborates with the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP) to support the Helmets for Families Project. Since 2012, this partnership has worked to educate communities on road safety while conducting research and advocating for stronger helmet-use legislation, particularly for children.
Manulife Cambodia’s road safety initiatives have increased helmet use and provided essential road safety education to parents, teachers, and students. The company has donated 6,000 helmets, protecting at least 109 students from serious road crash injuries. As a result, child helmet use in schools has risen by 80%, significantly reducing the risk of fatalities and injuries on Cambodian roads.

Promoting Better Health and Wellness
Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death and disability in Cambodia, responsible for 24% of fatalities. To address this critical issue, Manulife partners with Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC), an independent non-profit pediatric healthcare organization. This collaboration aims to improve healthcare access and support children with congenital heart disease, which affects nearly one in every 100 newborns. While 80% of these cases do not require surgery, many children need long-term holistic treatment and regular follow-ups.
Since 2015, Manulife Cambodia has actively supported AHC’s efforts through fundraising and direct contributions. Employees worldwide participate in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, raising over USD 110,000 in 2017 and more than USD 80,000 in 2018. These funds directly support AHC’s cardiology care, benefiting over 1,200 young patients annually.
The company’s health initiatives extend beyond cardiac care. Manulife has provided lung function tests to 600 patients, contributed 500 home nebulizers for children with asthma, and established 40 nebulization centers in clinics and hospitals across 14 provinces. These efforts have led to a 12% increase in patients seeking treatment for asthma and COPD.
Empowering Cambodians Through Financial Literacy
Manulife Cambodia is deeply committed to building a stronger financial future for Cambodian families. Since 2012, the company has hosted annual public and client seminars on financial literacy, reaching over 130,000 Cambodians. By equipping individuals with essential knowledge about financial planning, insurance, and long-term security, Manulife continues to empower communities to make informed financial decisions.
Through its ongoing CSR efforts, Manulife Cambodia demonstrates that corporate responsibility goes beyond business—it is about making a lasting impact on society. By addressing road safety, promoting better health, and improving financial literacy, Manulife is actively shaping a safer, healthier, and more financially secure future for Cambodia.
