Since its inception 44 years ago, Johor Port Berhad, a member of the MMC Group, has made substantial contributions to the growth of international trade in Malaysia. Today, it stands as the premier Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port in the country. The Port has established a reputation as the world’s single largest Palm Oil Terminal and is ranked fourth globally in handling London Metal Exchange (LME) cargo, which is the world’s leading market for non-ferrous metals. Within Malaysia, it is a major hub for discharging Rice, Cocoa, Fertilizer, and Cement.

Overcoming Challenges and New Milestones
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 in 2020, such as the shortage of Empty Containers, Johor Port ended the year on a positive note by surpassing 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The Port’s robust support of Gateway cargoes played a key role in this achievement. Additionally, four new services were secured, primarily for the Intra-Asia region, reflecting the Port’s strong connections to Intra-Asia destinations.
In April 2021, Johor Port reached a significant milestone by handling the first export of Petroliam Nasional Berhad’s (PETRONAS) Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in ISO Tank Containers to Shanghai, China. The Port provided crucial Dangerous Goods (DG) management and special cargo handling services for the successful shipment.
Core Strengths and Future Growth
Johor Port’s continuous process streamlining, equipment upgrades, and effective people management, combined with its strategic location and customer segmentation, provide a solid foundation for its future growth. These strengths position the Port as a leading Regional Commodity Hub and give it a competitive edge in the industry.
“Johor Port has come a long way since its establishment in 1977. Becoming the world’s single largest Palm Oil Terminal is just one of its many milestones. With its core strengths and strategic positioning, Johor Port is well on its way to achieving even more significant milestones in the future.”
