Indochina Development Partners Lao Sole Ltd (IDP) was formally established in January 2016 and registered in Savannakhet province, Lao PDR. Specializing in rice milling, IDP processes paddy for export while also producing rice seeds, which are provided to farmers on credit and repurchased after harvest.
With a strong commitment to long-term relationships with Lao farmers, IDP ensures the production of high-quality rice that meets international market standards. The company’s mission is to become the leading producer and exporter of glutinous rice in Laos.

Expanding into Global Markets
IDP currently exports its products to several countries across Europe, Australia, and Asia, with a particular focus on China and Vietnam. Many of its clients are food ingredient producers and wholesalers with a presence in multiple countries. Looking ahead, IDP has plans to enter the USA and Canadian markets, recognizing them as ideal for their organic rice products.
Overcoming Initial Challenges
The early years posed challenges for IDP, but within just six months, the company successfully built a team of 200 employees, despite many of them having little prior experience in the rice industry. By overcoming these obstacles, IDP became the first company in Laos to export glutinous rice and introduce Lao rice to international markets in under five years.
Differentiating Through Quality Control
IDP stands out in the market by implementing stringent quality control systems, ensuring that its products meet international standards. Laos’ traditional farming methods, which avoid the use of fertilizers, add to the uniqueness of its glutinous rice. By integrating quality control throughout the supply chain—from seed production to final export—IDP enhances the value of Laotian rice on the global stage.
Addressing Industry Challenges
Recently, IDP has faced challenges such as a shortage of paddy due to fluctuating rice prices. Laos’ underdeveloped irrigation infrastructure also leads to an abundant first harvest, followed by lower yields throughout the rest of the year. Additionally, farmers hesitate to sell their produce when market prices are lower than in previous years.
To combat these challenges, IDP works closely with farmers, providing education on modern rice farming techniques and commercial market trends. By bridging the gap between agricultural production and market dynamics, the company ensures sustainable growth for both farmers and the industry.
A Vision for Global Expansion
For SMEs to thrive beyond their local markets, IDP believes they must continuously improve their systems, adopt new technologies, and lead in product innovation. In the mid to long term, IDP envisions expanding globally, backed by a strong management team committed to growth and adaptation. The company’s solid reputation and ability to evolve with market trends position it well for further success.
Investing in Capacity Building
IDP is actively focusing on capacity building within the organization, with ongoing training programs for product identification and quality control. Plans for external training in international standard programs are also in motion to further enhance operational efficiency.
Recognition at ACES 2022
IDP acknowledges that winning at ACES 2022 would be a testament to its dedication and hard work over the years. The recognition would not only strengthen its industry standing but also open doors to new opportunities in untapped markets.
“In nations where free enterprise is still a new concept, it is heartening to see a country’s major rice production conglomerate working to enrich farmers both by a ready purchasing chain, as well as efforts to educate producers on world economics and business principles.”
