Indian Oil Corporation

Working responsibly to meet India’s energy and community needs

IndianOil is one of India’s largest and most trusted companies. Ranked 212 in Fortune’s Global 500 listing for 2021, it is an energy major with a presence throughout India in almost all the streams of Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals and Alternate Energy sources, accounting for nearly half of the country’s petroleum products market share. With a 15,000-kilometre-long cross-country pipeline network, one of the largest pipeline networks in the world, IndianOil facilitates the transportation of crude oil to refineries and finished products to high-demand centres in an efficient, economical and environment-friendly manner. With its reach, the company is well connected to carry out its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Right from its inception, IndianOil has been conscious of its responsibility and commitment towards society and sustainability. The company has been actively engaged in various CSR programmes over the years and undertakes community welfare projects that are in line with government directives and assessed needs. With IndianOil locations spread across the length and breadth of India, its community welfare projects are able to reach every corner of the country.

The company’s CSR initiatives encompass the entire gamut of social welfare and upliftment activities throughout the nation. There is a significant emphasis on the development of communities around which it operates. Key areas of focus include providing safe drinking water and protection of water resources, healthcare and sanitation, education and employment-enhancing vocational skills, and empowerment of women and socially and economically marginalised groups. IndianOil also undertakes various CSR projects in underdeveloped districts of the country to improve the quality of life in these areas. To ensure the maximum outcome for its CSR projects, IndianOil works closely with the local community and stakeholders.

One of IndianOil’s major community projects is the Assam Oil School of Nursing in Digboi, Assam. Established in 1986, it offers a 3-year Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree to underprivileged girls from the state of Assam. The school helps to meet the shortage of qualified nurses in this region and provide students with a stable career and livelihood.

Another initiative that is focused on education for girls is the IndianOil Vidushi programme that helps underprivileged girls gain admission to prestigious engineering institutions. The entire cost for the students, from specialised coaching, study materials, boarding and food, and health insurance is borne by IndianOil.

The company is also bringing primary healthcare to communities in rural areas through its CSR initiatives. In India, 68.84% of the population lives in rural areas, where proper healthcare facilities are lacking. Through the IndianOil Aarogyam flagship programme, 12 mobile medical units have been operating in Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Bongaigaon (Assam) and Paradip (Odisha). Each unit consists of a four-member medical team that has one doctor, one nurse, one nursing attendant and one driver-cum-community mobilizer.

IndianOil also provides assistance to Divyangjans (persons with disabilities). Assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks, Braille kits for the visually impaired, hearing aids and artificial limbs been provided to more than 40,000 Divyangjans across 23 states in India. This initiative is being carried out in association with the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation (ALIMCO).

Such meaningful CSR efforts has earned IndianOil a number of awards, including the “National CSR Award” under the Women and Child Development category for its Assam Oil School of Nursing programme, and the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry’s (FIPI) “Sustainably Growing Corporate of the Year Award” for excellence in sustainability and benefits extended to society and the environment.

“Ensuring CSR programmes reach all who need it in a country with a population of 1.3 billion can be a daunting task. But IndianOil with its pan-Indian presence is able to effectively bring crucial CSR programmes to all parts of the country.”
