Chew’s Agriculture Pte Ltd (Chew’s) was established in 1987 in Singapore. It is currently the largest producer of chicken eggs in Singapore, offering eggs with added nutrients such as Omega 3, Omega 6 and Organic Selenium, among others. Chew’s also offers pasteurised liquid eggs, as well as being the first and only producer of Certified Humane® cage-free eggs in Singapore.
Chew’s current customer base includes the Singapore and Hong Kong markets. Some of their more notable local customers include NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Cold Storage, Giant, Pandamart, Redmart, Amazonfresh as well as the leading food service and hospitality suppliers in Singapore.
The organization proudly recognizes that they are in the business of feeding a nation; a notion that motivates Chew’s to continuously strive for excellence. Singapore has set a target of producing 30 percent of the island nation’s nutritional needs by the year 2030, and Chew’s aspires to play a contributing part in this endeavour. The company has scaled up its daily production to 800,000 eggs and has plans to increase its production further to reach a target of one million eggs daily in future.
With an eye on sustainability, Chew’s managed to set up a brand-new, high-tech farm in Singapore in 2020, despite the difficulties brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. A big believer that automation and technological innovation will continue to help shape sustainable farming practices in Singapore, Chew’s uses the latest technology which requires minimal human intervention. For example, the climate-controlled chicken houses are programmed to automatically deliver water and feed to the hens. Even egg collection and sorting are completely automated.
In keeping to their mission which is ‘to provide fresh and nutritious produce cultivated in an eco-conscious and sustainable manner’, Chew’s is well on their way to becoming a net zero-emission farm running on green renewable energy. The facility is equipped to treat its own waste and in the process, generate electricity for the facility’s operations. Extensive use of solar energy and rainwater harvesting within their farms are also in the works. With these initiatives, the company hopes to showcase the possibility of having a carbon neutral or even carbon negative farm.
To achieve a high standard of animal welfare, Chew’s raises some of their poultry in a state-of-the-art aviary system. The cage-free hens are raised in an environment that meets stringent standards and are given a nutritious, natural plant-based diet that is also free of hormones and antibiotics. As such, it is the only poultry farm today in Singapore that has been given the Certified Humane® qualification from Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) of USA. With Chew’s modern methods of farming, discerning Singaporean consumers have the option of eating “local” and reducing their carbon footprint.
Citing their people as the key pillar to their resilience over the years, Chew’s pays tribute to their employees, many of whom have been with them for years, and are masters at their trade. Throughout the peaks and troughs of the pandemic, Chew’s priority was to ensure that its team was safe, while being able to perform their duties at work without any additional risks.
A strong believer that SMEs are able to succeed beyond the traditional markets that they operate in, Chew’s strategy is to establish a solid home base and use it as a springboard. Acknowledging the coming-of-age of a new generation of internet-savvy consumers, a significant portion of the organization’s sales avenue will move online. Chew’s has invested to make itself even more accessible on digital platforms. Their products are now readily available online, with a seamless purchase and delivery experience being supported by excellent customer service.
By winning the ACES Award, the organization hopes to showcase to the world that despite little to no natural resources, Singapore is capable of producing their own food using world-class facilities coupled with sheer perseverance and ingenuity.
