A Legacy of Transformation
BAT Bangladesh began its journey in 1910 as Imperial Tobacco Company, later becoming Bangladesh Tobacco Company (BTC) in 1972. Today, this century-old organization is known as BAT Bangladesh and operates as part of BAT plc, one of the world’s leading tobacco groups, with brands sold in approximately 200 markets worldwide.
Recognizing the need for a business model that ensures sustainable excellence, BAT Group has embraced a vision for A Better Tomorrow™, setting the stage for transformation across all its markets. Drawing from this global commitment, BAT Bangladesh is dedicated to creating long-term value for stakeholders by prioritizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is at the core of BAT Bangladesh’s operations, ensuring that corporate governance and business practices align with global sustainability standards. A dedicated management team works to plan and execute ESG-driven initiatives, including corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Supporting these efforts is an active CSR committee composed of professionals from various sectors, alongside a dedicated Sustainability Affairs Team under the External Affairs Department, responsible for strategic ESG implementation.
BAT Bangladesh has set ambitious sustainability targets, including achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2030 (Scope 1 & 2) and net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. Its ESG approach spans environmental impact reduction, robust governance systems, employee investment, consumer responsibility, and community development, all integrated into its daily operations.
Driving Economic and Social Impact
As one of Bangladesh’s most economically significant corporations, BAT Bangladesh contributes to national development by supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), developing skilled human resources, integrating global work practices, and implementing an environmentally responsible business model. The company plays a key role in maximizing tax contributions to the national exchequer and generating large-scale employment.
BAT Bangladesh also leads in environmental management by investing in sustainable practices and sharing best practices across its operational ecosystem. Its achievements in sustainability include LEED and AWS certifications, waste recycling initiatives, and a commitment to zero waste to landfill.

Flagship Community Initiatives
Beyond business operations, BAT Bangladesh actively supports communities through three flagship sustainability programs: afforestation, safe drinking water, and renewable energy.
Through its afforestation initiative, the company has distributed 120 million fruit, forestry, and medicinal plant saplings and established 119 biodiversity corners. These efforts support the Bangladesh government’s targets under UN SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The safe drinking water initiative, launched in 2009, provides access to clean water for rural communities. This program aligns with the national goal of ensuring 100% safe drinking water access by 2030.
Under its renewable energy initiative, BAT Bangladesh has installed 2,591 solar home systems across 25 off-grid villages in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, significantly improving community living standards.
BAT Bangladesh is an exemplary example of a corporation invested in the country in which it does business. Even as it uses Bangladesh as a base, it has given back by ensuring safe drinking water to rural communities since 2009 and is supporting the government’s effort in ensuring 100% of the population enjoys safely managed drinking water services by 2030; a targeted, long-haul investment in the country, among other valuable initiatives. - Shanggari Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, MORS Group
Through its unwavering commitment to sustainability and community development, BAT Bangladesh continues to set the benchmark for responsible corporate leadership, shaping a future where economic progress and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
