UTC Climate, Controls & Security

“The company decides that the community care and outreach programmes that it carries out need to feature a combination of responsive actions for the needs of community whilst delivering on their sustainability commitment.”

A unit of United Technologies Corp (UTC), which ranked 45 in the Fortune 100 with more than $57 billion in sales in 2016 and is among the world’s most respected companies (2017 List, Barron’s), UTC Climate, Controls & Security is a leading provider of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, building controls and automation, and fire and security systems leading to safer, smarter, sustainable and high-performance buildings.
At UTC the company decides that the community care and outreach programmes that it carries out need to feature a combination of responsive actions for the needs of community whilst delivering on their sustainability commitment at the same time.

The company recognises the importance of a sustainable future, which it believes should be held in trust by the people of today for the next generation. It believes that knowledge and science are the best ways sustainable futures can be developed. Thus, to help students form good habits that promote sustainability and inspire them to explore the fields of STEM, the company developed a community outreach programme, Green Shoots, in partnership with local schools. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. STEM education is active and focuses on a student-centred learning environment. Students engage in questioning, problem solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they address real life issues. In STEM education, employee volunteers function as classroom facilitators. They guide students through the problem-solving process and plan projects that lead to mastery of content and STEM proficiency.
Although Asia-wide programmes like this can cost a lot of money, UTC believes that the costs incurred are an investment in the future. The company says, “We do this simply because we believe it’s the right thing to do.”

Across Asia, around 250 Green Shoots sessions, involving about 6,200 employee volunteers, have been successfully carried out, benefitting more than 43,000 primary school students. Nearly 1,000 students from families with financial assistance needs have received Green Shoots Scholarships.

The company takes the responsibility of enhancing the well-being of the communities where they operate because they believe positive engagement encourages growth and vitality, and it is the right thing to do and the right way to give back to society. As such, together with their dedicated CSR team, including the Green Shoots programme team, UTC has collectively contributed financial gifts, products and volunteer hours to a range of causes and community organisations around the world.
Voluntary participation from all the employees has also played a key factor in contributing to the success of all the company’s CSR programmes. Furthermore, each employee, coming from different teams and entities of UTC, is encouraged to dedicate their time to live up to the company’s goal of sustainability while supporting education through their first-hand involvement.
