Farming Out Success

Myanma Awba Group Company Ltd’s contribution to its homeland.

No other agricultural company has been so dedicated to fostering their local farming community quite like Myanma Awba Group Company Ltd. With its impetus on improving the financial capabilities and livelihoods of Myanmar farmers to improve the country’s economy, this people-centric company has earned its standing as one of the Top Community Care Company Companies in Asia.
Myanma Awba was registered in 1995 and has since been serving 3.5 million rural farmers. This 70 percent of Myanmar’s total population contributes to 26 percent of the nation’s total GDP. By providing seeds, fertilisers, agro-chemicals, technology and microfinance to farming communities, the Group has become Myanmar’s largest manufacturer and distributor of agricultural inputs.

Despite possessing arable land and a wide variety of weather conditions, the country has been facing low crop productivity. Without the access to the right equipment, farmers consistently face financial crisis and often rely on informal systems of financial loans with high interest rates. Being in an influential position on the local, national and international fronts, Myanma Awba has made the commitment to improve the lives of farmers, their families and communities through long-term, sustainable solutions.

In order to provide holistic solutions throughout the entire agricultural chain so as to significantly improve livelihoods, Myanma Awba’s agronomists engage directly with the farming community to gain in-depth understanding of their needs beyond their farm land. Myanma Awba Grievance Mechanisms provides a two-way communication channel between the company and their clients to ensure community members are given a voice for their concerns. This platform, co-partnered with Conyet, also assists in managing and mitigating risks, as well as obtaining social license to operate in the community. This healthy communication medium has allowed the company to offer service to both the farmers’ primary and secondary needs, such as education, family development and wellness and community development.
As experts who understand the needs of farmers, championing the farming community and educating them on better agricultural practices are natural extensions of their capabilities. In collaboration with other organisations, they have performed educational and efficiency outreaches such as the Integrated Pest Management Programme that began in 1997. The programme aims to keep pesticides and other interventions to economically justified levels and minimise risks to human health and the environment. Their Grain Bank project includes Warehouse Receipt Financing system for the Myanmar grain industry, which helps improve cost and efficiency at all stages of the agricultural chain. These programmes are simply a small glimpse of Myanma Awba’s varied assistance programmes which stablises the farmer’s cashflow, improves post-harvest performance, decreases environmental impact and boosts Myanmar’s economy.

Their concern for the farming population and corresponding CSR initiatives are heavily integrated into all levels of their workforce. Under their Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental (QHSE) Committee, the Chairman and suitable members lay down, execute and enforce sustainability goals within the company. By complying to the environmental quality standards set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, they safeguard both mother nature and the well-being of their community and workers. Their employees are also well informed of the company’s community programmes and are expected to improve work performance as well as uphold moral and work responsibilities with a communal spirit. Myanma Awba also ensures that their workers, like their clients, are well taken care of in order that they can achieve their full potential.
Due to their extensive efforts, Myanma Awba has taken on a significant part of the national and global drive to provide a better quality of life for the country’s food producers. The company’s investment in economic progress, social responsibility and environmental concerns have buoyed the farming communities, achieving not only recognition for the company’s efforts, but putting smiles on their clients’ faces as well.
